HELLO AND WELCOME TO SOUL WELL
How would you answer if I asked you to tell me: How is it with your soul?
I recall being asked that question at a prayer meeting in an Irish Methodist church a few years ago. I immediately responded with a colloquialism: I’m grand! After all, it’s a commonplace exchange: You’re OK! I’m OK!
However, the question intrigued me and I began to explore its origins. Apparently, it was the central question asked at early Methodist class meetings.
Although the original phrasing of the question was: How does your soul prosper? I discovered that it was aimed at inquiring into the state of one’s soul. Nonetheless, our answers should point beyond a current state or feeling to how we are working out our salvation. In other words, it focuses on how our soul grows or moves forward as followers of Jesus Christ.
The sort of answer anticipated to such a fundamental inquiry is that our lives are growing closer to the image of Christ. As the co-founder of Methodism, John Wesley clarified, we are either growing closer to Christlikeness or lessening in this intention.
That being said, the pace and demand of modern society seem to leave little room for the human soul to find space in order to become resilient. The Lord Jesus Christ even points to the tiring effects of religious rule-keeping when He invites the hassled masses to Come to me, all weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)

Soul Well was created as a space for helping people grow in Christlikeness through reflection. It is an enterprise inspired to help the human soul be replenished and reawakened through counselling, teaching, and testimonies of faith lived out in everyday life.
